Aftercare Guide

Making Braids Last in Miami Humidity

South Florida's heat and humidity can challenge even the best-installed braids. Yulis shares her top aftercare tips for Cutler Bay clients who want their protective styles to stay fresh, frizz-free, and polished for weeks.

Miami humidity is no joke. With average humidity levels hovering around 75% year-round, braids face constant moisture exposure that can lead to frizz, loosened edges, and premature style breakdown. But with the right aftercare routine, your braids can stay looking salon-fresh for 6–8 weeks.

1. Wrap Your Hair at Night with a Silk Scarf

This is the single most impactful habit for braid longevity. A silk or satin scarf reduces friction, locks in moisture balance, and prevents the loose strands that cause frizz. Yulis recommends wrapping your hair loosely — not too tight — and securing the scarf around your forehead or crown. A silk bonnet works too, but a scarf gives you more control over how the braids are positioned overnight.

2. Keep Your Scalp Light and Clean

A clean scalp is a healthy scalp. Use a lightweight, alcohol-based scalp refresh spray or diluted apple cider vinegar to keep buildup at bay. Avoid heavy oils like coconut or castor oil directly on the scalp — they trap moisture and can cause itching or irritation in humid weather. If your scalp feels dry, apply a thin layer of jojoba or argan oil along the braids, not the roots.

3. Minimize Water Exposure

We know Miami summers make this difficult, but excessive water exposure is one of the fastest ways to shorten your braid life. When swimming, wear a snug swim cap. After showering, wrap your hair immediately with a microfiber towel or silk scarf to speed up drying. Standing water on braids creates a damp environment that encourages mildew and frizz.

4. Refresh Edges and Baby Hairs Weekly

The first week after installation, your edges will look sharp. By week three, humidity and daily movement can soften them. A light edge control gel applied with a small brush can bring back that clean finish. Don't over-apply — a thin layer is enough. Let it dry completely before wrapping at night.

5. Don't Over-Manipulate Your Style

The more you pull, twist, or restyle your braids, the faster they'll loosen. If you like switching between updos and down styles, limit restyling to 2–3 times per week. Use soft, coil-free hair ties and avoid elastic bands that leave creases or cause breakage at the part line.

6. Address Frizz Early

If you notice individual strands frizzing, don't wait. A small amount of edge control or light-hold gel smoothed over the affected area with your fingers can re-seal the braid surface. For boho or goddess braids, a light curling iron on low heat can refresh loose accent curls without damaging the synthetic fiber.

7. Know When It's Time to Remove Them

Even with perfect care, braids have a lifespan. Yulis recommends removing protective styles after 6–8 weeks maximum. Leaving them in longer can cause matting, tangling, and excessive shedding at the roots. When you're ready for a fresh install, book your touch-up or new style appointment at the Cutler Bay studio.

Following these tips will help your braids withstand Miami's humidity and stay looking polished from install day to removal. Ready to book your next style? Contact Yulis to schedule an appointment in Cutler Bay, FL.
